dodge logoIn 1901 John Francis Dodge and Horace Elgin Dodge moved their Dodge Brothers Bicycle & Machine Factory to Detroit, Michigan. Their bearings and other parts were in demand with the early automobile industry, and they helped design motor parts for early Oldsmobiles. A new customer offered them a 10% stake in his firm if they would tool up and produce the mechanical parts needed for his new car. The man’s name was Henry Ford, and the car he later introduced in 1908, the Model T, put America – and much of the world – on the wheels. Incidentally, for the first 5 years of production, the Ford Model Tactually carried the Dodge Brothers logo on its running gear! Mechanically, the Model T was more Dodge than Ford. This helped the Dodges become the world’s largest automotive supplier and built their reputation for quality and dependability. Eventually they became frustrated with Henry Ford’s obsession with low price than product value. They figured that all those Model T owners would willingly pay more for solid quality and decided that they were the ones to provide it.

In November of 1914, a somewhat plain black touring car dubbed “Old Betsey” rolled out of the Dodge plant. It cost considerably more than Model T – but it was a touring car with a steel body, a self-starter and electric lighting, a 35-horsepower engine, even a speedometer. More important, buyers soon discovered that the Dodge definition of “dependable” mean thousands of miles without majors repairs, partly due to the brothers’ hands-on approach to product testing: for example, they personally dropped tyres from the roof of their factory to test casings.
